Candles can completely transform a space, adding warmth and ambiance to any room. But, whether you're a seasoned candle lover or just starting to enjoy them, there's a good chance you might be unknowingly making a few common mistakes that can shorten the life of your candle or prevent them from burning properly. Don't worry - we've got you covered. Here are four candle mistakes and how to fix them so you can get the most out of your favorite candles.
01. Limit Burn Time
Upon first use, always burn your candle until you reach a full melt pool. We recommend burning yours for approximately 4 hours the first time around. This allows the top layer of wax to fully melt, ensuring an even burn come the next use.
After that, burn your candle for 2-4 hours at a time. This allows the candle to burn properly and avoids tunneling. Tunneling refers to an uneven melt pool and results in an uneven burn and wasted wax.
Note: Our all natural coconut wax blend will initially "hang up" on the sides of the vessel. However, as the wick burns, the sides of the vessel will heat up, and melt the rest of the wax.
02. Care for the Wick
A candle is only as good its wick. Keeping your candle's wick trimmed ahead of every light is essential to maintaining a clean, even burn.
Using a wick trimmer, trim wick to 1/8" prior to lighting. An untrimmed wick can result in over heating, production of soot, and reduction of your candle's lifespan.
03. Avoid Drafty Areas
Currents of air cause your candle to burn faster and produces excessive smoke. Place your candle away from areas of the house that tend to be drafty; windows, A/C vents, and fans.
Note: If you notice the flame of your candle flickering in any direction other than straight up, there is a draft.
04. Don't Leave a Candle Unattended
Most importantly, never leave a candle unattended. Not only is there a risk of fire when candles are forgotten, but you also run the risk of burning the candle for too long.
Burning your candle for over 4 hours creates an excessively long wick which results in over heating your candle and reduction in burn time. Alternating your candles is a great way to prolong their burn time.
